you don't say whether you like it black but my first thought was decoupage (fabrics or paper) or paint. This is what I was thinking. (I like the idea of the feet on the red one)
I would definitely add feet to it.

i added feet on the bottom. Then added gold leave paint to all the metal. Maybe add a glass top.
I would clean the trunk, polish the metal and leave the trunk alone but put some bright colored things on it. Maybe a runner. Pull the red and the blue from your blanket and chair.
This was on Pinteres. Ya might wanna try looking over there... OR... on that show “Flea Market Flip” a lot of people turn a old trunk onto its side & make a bar-cart .
My question to you, Are you wanting more color??? Or do you want more of a fancy??? The# 1 thing I would do is add feet. But there are more than wooden feet!!! Now you have hair pin legs, castor wheels that lock,or different varieties of of wooden legs. But please don't put those little bun feet on that beautiful trunk. And paint it what you feel..use primer first unless it's already in the paint. My 2cents says leave the silver but if u don't like it then after you paint the trunk then have at it . The hardware may be harder to paint..I have one almost just like yours. Waiting for inspiration to stike ....GOOD LUCK....post when done????
Stand it on its end- put legs or rollers on bottom. Open it and consider the possibilities……shelves….books, linens, sewing items, small wardrobe with pole, sweater cabinet - lots of options.
