My husband did a conversion for a friend a while back. He added the sink to the top. You will lose part of your drawers for the drain but can angle it so that you only lose the top set. You can purchase a sink that will basically sit on top and you can set with silicone sealant or you can cut a hole in the top to sit the sink inside it.

I had purchased an old dresser with the same intent. I was blessed to find a top mounting sink in a bowl shape at our local Goodwill for $15 and brand new. I set it on top of the dresser but difficult for me (5 ft tall) to reach into. So when I walked into the Salvation Army, I spied a narrow cabinet like for under a TV with 3 drawers in the middle and glass doors on either side. We put hole on top for drain and second for faucet; then the top two drawers were shortened for the pipes; the top one can hold toothpaste. The second can hold washcloths and the third is regular depth. Towels go on either side behind the glass doors. Total cost because of faucet I chose: $155. To purchase big box store: $450+.

Yes you just need to cut out the back to fit over pipes and cut out the top for a sink.
