I would not advise using empty laundry detergent bottles for storage, unless you want whatever you put inside to smell like the former detergent.
Some of the uses suggested in Carrie's link are for contents for which it wouldn't matter if they smelt like detergent, such as salt for the sidewalk.
Unfortunately though, the type of plastic used for these containers tends to retain scents or odours.
I take mine to my recycling center who gives them away for diabetic needle storage and disposal.
