How can I use pool noodles to make trees?

Do you have any suggestion for using pool noodles to make trees. They need to stand alone, not be too tall, ( maybe styrofoam base )and they have to be soft enough that if a dog running fast hits it, they will not get hurt .

  • It's a pool noodle. If a dog plows into it, nothing is going to happen to the dog. It depends on what you use for "leaves" and how you attach them. I get being careful around pets, I have a house full of animals. Yet none have ever charged a plant on purpose. Cats have knocked a few over, but none have used my plants as tackling dummies, inside or out. See if this is what you are looking for.

You could make party decor palm trees from them by threading some slightly bent rebar through them and staking them in the ground if you are outside. Maybe use add concrete to an old painted paint tin to make a base for indoors. Green plastic bags as leaves.

This sounds like a dog agility course? Perhaps then you should rather use semi-rigid pipe inside that is reinforced at the base with rebar planted into something. That way the trees would have some ‘give’

    Hi Margo,

Gather enough Pool noodles to make the girth of tree you want. Stick them all one at a time to a large diameter drainage pipe, using a good glue or tape. Next do the same again, this time stick with a suitable glue. Stick each of them between the other noodles (If you want them to be more realistic start with them slightly uneven and slightly slanted on the first round). When all dry. Add more noodles to the inside of the pipe at the top. When dry, tape or glue together some of them to form them together 3/4 of the way up. Now you should have the makings of a tree.

You may wish to add wire to the inside of some of the noodles that will become branches, to allow you to bend them into place. On these wires you can add leaves (silk foliage is a good idea). Hope that helps you.
