Lisa...You can strip the paint off or you can sand. After doing either prime and paint.
You can strip the paint (my personal favorite stripper is "Citristrip" - easy to use and the fumes are not toxic) and sand. But please be aware that depending on the age of the house, the doors may have been painted with lead based paint.
You can take the doors off and use a chemical stripper, that should do the trick. Do know it can be a slow process so be patient. But indeed, if they're super old, they may have lead paint on them.
Remove them & get setup in area where you have plenty of room & good ventilation,warm dry area. Gel strippers work but still may need to do more than once,& need sand paper.
