  This project is an old Casita we are remodeling and across town. With the white wash suggestions given, I think will be the answer to my question

You can always prime and paint...be sure to clean well and sand too.

Either stain a deep finish like Java or paint. I have all my doors painted, most with bright white RustOleum Enamel paint because it's so durable and my husband uses doors and trim to scratch his back, like a bear.
