Affordable window treatment

Question

Hello, recently purchased a home that has ruffles window treatments. I don't care for them however have not taken them down since i fear the windows will look too bare. Can't figure out what to use in their place without breaking the bank. Could you help? Your time is much appreciated.

HI Nathalie. I have a few home improvement stores in my area that sell faux wood blinds. They are able to cut them to size right at the store so there is no special ordering. You just need you window measurements. If you have a Home Depot in your area I know they do it.

I am a double rod curtain girl. Sheers underneath and pretty curtains on top. Wait till January white sales. You can make easy breezy curtains from sheets or drop cloths using curtain rings with clips. Keep your eyes peeled as I have found curtains as cheap as $8.88 per panel. Check out Big Lots, I found sheers there for $5 per panel.

You could hang sheers on the bar and extend the bar past the window frame to include some drapes on each end on the same bar, if that is in the living room. WE did that and used longer rods with decorative ends and a hook on each end to replace the flat curtain rod that came in the house. In the kitchen you could make cafeteria style and use the flat curtain rods with the extra one from the front room if you replaced it with 2 hooks for a round rod and decorative end. Hope this helps. Hi Nathalie, If your handy with tools, you could make cornice's or window coverings out of pallet wood! You can always find free pallets! You could paint them or leave them nautural. I am with Naomie, just hang non-descript sheer panels until you know what you want to do. Big Lots is a good place to find panels, but they are in all the stores if you don't live near a Big Lots. If you sew, you can get 2 panels out of one window scarf. One thing about this time of the year is that we tend to guild the lily, so your ruffles might be just right for holiday decore.

I think this must face the back yard and that privacy is not an issue. I'm kinda of partial to sheers if that is the case, and I suggest you go to Overstock.com where prices are very reasonable.

I have had good luck with pleated cell shades. When you want them up, they practically disappear up to the head rail; down, they give great privacy.

Well, until you find something you really like, keep in mind to get that ruffle-y look, the valances are much wider than the window is. There may be two or three valances on the existing rod.

If there are three valances, take one off and spread out the remaining two. See how you like it. Maybe take off two, and spread out the one that remains.

If it is one very long piece of material to make the valance, cut off part of it, leaving enough to just cover the rod. I bought cloth napkins and folded corner to corner and hung over the rod evenly and overlapped a bit and they made the cutest valance. I stitched the tips together but found out it was not necessary. I have also used tablecloths on bigger windows and didn't even need to hem. Just buy clip rings and string on rod.

This style of frilly valance is very dated and looks cheap. I would say take them off right away and live with the windows uncovered for a while. At least that way you will be starting with clean, uncluttered windows without any particular decorating time period distracting the view.

Decide whether you want new window coverings that give privacy only after dark, open and close to completely, cover the entire window, open partway to allow for some air flow, and then choose accordingly.

You can use the same valance rod and ruffled valance you have now, but cut the fabric at least 1/3 or more so that the valance is straight, not ruffled. It will cost you nothing but give you a sleeker, more modern look. If you don't like the fabric, use the same (cut shorter version) fabric as a pattern and make new ones.
