painting or staining plastic?

I spray paint just about everything! including pots with plants in them LOL I only use Rustoleum's 2x spray paint at Home Depot. It is by far the best that i have used in many years of spray painting. Just clean the piece really well and dry and spray light coats! Have fun!

If you don't want to paint the chairs, make a simple slip cover from vintage table cloths that have the same color way as your mosaic top. Most of the cloths are cotton and just be thrown in the wash to clean. . .

If you're going to paint it, why not have fun and stencil it with a design?

I vote for Rustoleum spray paint. It comes in so many colors that you are sure to find one to go with your color scheme.

I would spray paint chairs in blue and use clothes dye for the fabric seat either in pink or blue to match table top.

I would be cautious of staining that. I'm not sure it would adhere and would it dry? I would spray paint with the plastic specific spray paint it is great! I use it all the time!

Would you paint the entire chair with the Rustoleum? I have chairs just like yours and would like to paint them too. But I would like to use a contrasting color for the frame. There are paints to work with any finish and that makes it so much easier to do. Please let us know the outcome. Many of us might copy your work.

What colour are the legs on your table? I'd spray paint that color. (With Rustoleum)

Funny you just posted this chair. I had 4 chairs from my Martha Stewart Umbrella table that got demolished in a storm. I just moved into an apartment and only needed one chair, so I gave 3 of them to my son and daughter in law. I kept one for myself. My new "accent" colors are now lime green, aqua, yellow and coral. I just painted the "material" of the chair (same as yours) with the aqua, and the metal parts of the chair, with lime green. Since my "puppies" had chewed on the bottom part of the material seat, and it was scratchy on my legs if I wore shorts, I took some leftover material that had the same colors in it, and sewed them onto the material for about a 5 to 6 inch overhang, and the chair is AWESOME! My cell phone broke so I can't get pics right now, or would post one. I am VERY pleased with how it all turned out :) And what's nice about paint, you can change it any time you get a "whim" for a different color scheme :)

I have 6 of these chairs and are still in good shape after being outside for 2 years. Please, please show pictures. We are thinking about painting also. Thanks.

I have these chairs also. I would "antique" the frame with some metallic paint lighter than the brown. Then spray the "fabric" with primer/paint. This is a material that is fairly porous so if you are any good at sewing or cross stitching you could also use floss to add designs.

As soon as I get my new cell phone, I'll send a pic. I'll make sure it's on THIS thread so you won't miss it. I used Rust-O-Leum Ultra Coat. Went on nicely and is holding up well so far. I also put a coat of clear Poly on the metal part of the chair. When you paint that "woven" seat part, it does tend to dry it out, so I sanded that lightly after the paint dried, so it isn't scratchy on my legs if wearing shorts. I promise, I WILL get a pic as soon as I can get the new phone :)

@Briana McKinnon I know it's still winter but I am thinking of projects for my backyard. One of them is to repaint my outdoor dining chairs. How did your chairs hold up with the paint last year? Did they peel or anything of the sort? I would like to paint the plastic mesh material on my chairs. I've had the set for five years and they are crying out for a paint job. Stay warm and think of Spring.

Donna, honestly...on top of a lot of craziness in life last summer/fall, after I cleaned the chairs good, I could not figure out how to get the mesh back on if I removed it, and I did not want the frame the same color I painted the mesh part. So basically I chickened out. I say go for it...if they need it bad there's no loss in trying. If you can remember, would you give me a time frame of when you youre going to do yours? Maybe we can take the plunge together. Did you read through the comments? I ended up buying a rust orange rustoleum paint that said it is good on plastic. I forget the brand off hand. Funny I checked my email today. I never check this account anymore. I deleted my facebook account that I signed up with. Was to fake and impersonal and I wasted way too much time on social media sites that I didnt have to spare. Anyway, the email account it went to was one I used for facebook only (and accounts I signed up for with it).

I'll continue to look for suggestions from the internet. Sometimes if I am lucky I might run into a paint sales person at Lowes or Home Depot and they can give me some advice. I also like asking around at Ace Hardware. They have given me advice many times before which have proven to be excellent. I plan to work on the chairs sometime next month and will certainly let you know what my process will be. In the mean time I'll stay busy planting seeds in my patio planters which I now have in the garage. Stay warm.
