This kitchen could really use some updates, right? This may not be your exact kitchen, but many of the tips shared about this one can help you make some changes in your kitchen to update it without ripping it all out and starting from scratch, and spending a small fortune.
1. First thing...knock out that valance over the window. Not only will this one change update the look of your kitchen, it will also let in more light from the window. They are generally easy to remove then just fill any nail or screw holes where it was attached.

2. Add some trim or even change the trim on your cabinet doors. Especially in homes built in the 60's and 70's they loved some flat knotty pine cabinet doors or some thin "beauty trim" was added. Another simple way to update and change the look of your kitchen. In this before and after, you can see that we added a classic shaker trim to the flat white painted doors. The result is a nice clean modern look. Almost any style of trim can be added. The possibilites are endless.
