Newspapers?

Can I use newspaper and other things- like shredded bills, paper waste, in my garden? What about the ink? Is it harmful? I know glossy mags won't compost.

I would suggest not using items with color ink.

I have used newspapers as a weed blocker before laying mulch. It does decompose quickly, (in my opinion), so use a thick layer.

I'm with Becky. A thick layer makes a great starter when you're creating a new bed via the "lasagne" method.

@Debbie L newspapers is a long standing method of gardening. Many who live in cold climates use them to prepare their beds for a cold winter. They spread them over top of their perennials to insulate them incase there is a thaw and quick freeze with little snow. Others use them to choke out the weeds before preparing a bed. If using as a mulch I would suggest shredding them and then a light covering of finely shredded mulch to disguise it to look like earth around your plants.
