Laura Williams-May on Mar 20, 2016There are youth groups of "troubled youth" or within the local high school with strong young people who are obligated or wish to do community service. You may ask them if you qualify for help to take a sledgehammer and knock out that part. Or better yet knock out the whole walk and reroute further away . make it wide [4 feet] for people to negotiate easily. Or put down gravel instead of dealing with laying new concrete.Helpful Reply

Hope Williams on Mar 21, 2016Hi Julia. You could have a tree service come out and they could cut the root causing the issue without hurting the tree. The tap root, main root of tree, us not usually one that travels along the surface of the ground like you are describing. They could pull it out and back fill the hole with dirt. Should not cost more than about $150 for a job as such.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Mar 21, 2016Since you are on a fixed income I would put a large pot of flowers there and get a couple cheap pavers and put them next to the concrete and make the path go around the messed up concrete- $5 cost max- I would just dig the stepping stone in the ground flush with the grass and call it good.Helpful Reply

Cindi on Mar 21, 2016If you can't find anyone to remove it at no cost to you, I'd just put out a decoration, pot of flowers, etc, and make up a cute "warning" sign, to be careful walking over that part of the path. Cheaper than having a tree removed, and it would look nice.Helpful Reply

Sheila D on Mar 21, 2016Miss Julia, check with city county. If it's on their side of the property, sometimes they will repair the sidewalk or remove either the roots or the treeHelpful Reply
