Cayenne Pepper! Sprinkle it in the soil and even on the leaves. You need to reapply each time it rains, but other than that, you should be good

I had to laugh when I saw this post. Our garden club met yesterday and while discussing cleaning up the pots for this years plants we mentioned that the squirrels have been storing their nuts in the soil. I'm afraid if I put cayenne pepper down it would deter them from using the pots for their winter storage.

You can put chicken wire just under the soil of the pot you don't want used for squirrel pantry. Make sue that you use the small openings chicken wire. If the openings are to large the squirrels will still dig in the pot and not move on to other nut storage.

Hardware cloth (it's not fabric) use tin snips to cut circumference of inside of pot, cut to center and take out enough to fit around plant. Fit it into pot and then cover it with small river rocks or mulch. Rains way too much here in the Pacific Northwest for cayenne.

Bury moth balls around the plants

Hi Virginia: If they are chewing on your stuff, spray it with a mixture of 3/4 water and 1/4 oil of clove (you can get it in the candy making section of the store, it's a bottle about 2 1/2 inches high and only costs a couple of bucks). Put this in a spray bottle and spray whatever you don't want chewed or clawed. Works for cats and dogs, too. Won't harm them, smells great, tastes terrible:( Good luck

  • Get a bag of blood meal from the nursery, place some on tops of soil. The squirrels don't like blood smell at all and it also is a mild fertilizer
