How can I prevent my "full of yard waste" paper bags from the rain?
I don't have any place to store them once full, inbetween biweekly pick-ups. My yard is large, many bags, and not in a position to fully compost yet. Thanks!!!
Get a container, mark it and store in fridge so that it doesn't mold before you get to it. I just spread mine on a different plant every morning so as not to have to store anything. But my house is teeny, and just steps away and part of the morning routine.
You can buy containers especially made for kitchen scraps to keep next to the sink. They come in all kinds of materials, some are quite attractive. I know someone who has a beautiful ceramic one. If that seems too expensive, try Hefty -- they used to make scrap bags that came with a plastic holder for the same purpose -- that's what I always used. Not sure they're made anymore, though. Google will certainly tell you about both options.
I have a metal ice bucket with a lid that is very nice, but since I rarely use an ice bucket, it is what I use for scraps and such that I use for composting in my garden and flower beds. I use a plastic bag to line it (tie a knot in the bottom). It has worked well for many years!
Love all these ideas, now to find a pretty lidded container, and get my husband to use it is another thing - if you could help with the husband part of things I'd welcome any suggestions :)
I'm keep a large plastic pitcher under the sink for compost which includes coffee grounds. About once a week we empty it in the compost container outsidr.
Just tell him, from now on, he will be responsible for puting the used coffee on the plants plus cleaning up the sink afterwards to! See how that works. Good luck Kay Adelaide Australia
to solve the husband part. just realize, it will be your job to put the grounds in the container. just leave a little plastic (matching color of your kitchen) on the counter. ask him to just set them in there. then you can put them where ever you want. outside right away or in a lidded container.
but did you know, that coffee grounds down the disposal is good for the disposal and keeps it smelling good? so, if they go in the dirt or the sink, you win. :)
We use a little trash can with the "step on" feature meant for a bathroom for our kitchen compost which makes it super easy to use. It has a plastic bucket inside. Got ours at a garage sale. You can paint, sticker, stencil etc. the stainless steel exterior to match your decor.
Hello Andrea,
