If you can get channel 44, there is a remodeling program prog., on daily. This restores homes, and gives lots of hints. One that is great, is Save it or Loose it, and there are others. There is one that is from TX, that is great, tho I don't know the web site for that one. If you can't get channel 44, perhaps a friend can get this for you, and they will show their web site. Her name is Joanna, I can't recall his name. Maybe someone else will tell you, as they read thru this site. Best wishes, J.
Okay, you're looking to sweep the whole house into the colonial times. You'll want to start with a clean pallet and paint your walls a neutral color. White and off white would be the most authentic, but you can also go for a light greige or soft latte color throughout leaving the ceilings white. Of course, hardwood floors would be the next giant step. You can do these yourself with minimal trouble and add large woven throw rugs or tapestry type area rugs. Beadboard, white wooden trim (over six inches tall, and white trim around the doorways and tops of walls add to the theme. Try enhancing your fireplace mantel with repurposed wood and brick overlay or redoing your fireplace with white wood surround. Ceiling beams and long, solid drapes are nice touches. In the bathroom, vintage tile, claw foot tubs, built-ins. Simple furniture. These are some major upgrades but if you are serious about doing your whole house, these are great starts. Imagine the fun you'll have a flea markets and antique stores finding accessories. Take your time, you don't have to fill your house in one week. The slower the better in finding the right piece for your taste. The biggest thing is paring down what you already have that doesn't fit into your new style.
