What is the lighting.location and size of the area you are trying to plant?
Full sun Morning and noon sun, northern Alabama, don't know dimension of area but it is a huge area going around my deck
Bulbs do well in the early spring. Crocus and snowbells are among the first up. Tulips are identified as early, mid and late blooming and come in a variety of sizes and colors. A good bulb cataloglue will usually offer collections that cover most of spring. Perrenials such as coneflowers, beebalm and black eyed Susan offer bloomsall summer thru a frost. Annuals like zinnia, which comes in all heights and colors, marigolds, lantana, celosia offer good color in the heat of summer.
