How to get rid of sand spurs in yard?
I have sand spurs growing all over my yard. Should I burn them so they don't germinate next Spring? I have too many to hand dig. Thank-you
It's challenging to deal with sand spurs after they develop. You should use a pre-emergent in early spring (there is corn gluten meal if you are going an organic route), and keep your grass as healthy as possible, as this will help crowd out sand spurs. Do not use a fertilizer too high in nitrogen, as it can encourage sand spur growth.
We had them in our barnyard in the cleared area just before the barn - as soon as I saw those little &*(* showing their very tiniest leaves - I pulled them up, put them in a pile - let them dry and burned them. In 2 seasons, I had them ALL gone. I got where I could see the tiniest one in a bunch of grass at 50 feet LOL. Wasn't about to spray anything since the horses, dogs, cats, whatever were out there all the time.
