if talking gardening, there are different zones depending on where u live and the plants that can be successfully grown for the climate
Look up Department of Natural Resources. They have zone maps
Google planting zones. The zones are for the different climates and plants. Like most tropical plant will not survive in Ohio, unless you take them inside for the colder months.

next time your in a dept or garden store you can simply pick up a pack of seeds and on the back you'll see a picture of the US with planting zones colored on it. Not sure if this is what you mean but when someone says zones to me this is what I think of.
