Try HomeAdvisor.com ...it's free and you will get reviews from people who have actually hired the person. :)
Do you have a senior center or a Habitat for Humanity in your area. Very often you can find people who would love to help you out and have the skills to do so. Best of luck!
I found my current handyman by referral on Nextdoor.com. Here is another site:

I have never used this service so I can't vouch for reliability. In my area Angie's List and Home Advisor have not been great. Maybe worth a try where you live though.
Have you tried your church? If there is no one there that fits the bill, maybe someone knows a person to help you. And you can look for retired carpenters, builders, etc. Good luck.
Check with your local fire department, believe it or not, lots of firefighters are plumbers, electricians and carpenters. My neighbors huge garage was built by fire fighters, who did it on the side or whenever they were off during the week. They did a fantastic job.
You should probably try to get a regular carpenter. A retired person will not work for any less than they, if they are skilled. Also many older people do not want to climb ladders. Is there a particular reason you want a retired person?
Ask at a local lumberyard (not the big box stores) for the names of people who do carpentry work. I found a very fine older carpenter this way, he had left his name and phone number at the service desk.
Will also try the lumber yard thank you
