I'd just white wash the brick to lighten it up a bit and maybe change the mantle. It's so unique though, I really wouldn't want to change anything else .
Wow unique! I understand a color change or perhaps display something large in the arched area to douse some of that brick expanse. Maybe some custom woodwork on either side of the firebox to tie in with ceiling beams? But unique beats out looking like everyone else.... I hope your new decor can blend with the fireplace...it will always be a major feature in this room.
Short of removing all the brick and starting over ,you could cover with a brick or stone veneer. There are many styles and colors to chose from. Check you building supply store or brick yard. they are not hard to install and look great. I've done two projects this way.
I really like you fireplace but I understand wanting to update. Maybe a lighter coler in it will look nice.
