8'x4' panels of white resin lattice always looks nice and is pretty cheap.

You can also get thin strips of wood 4" wide and apply them horizonally leaving a space between of 1/2" to 1" apart. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/5d/c3/c7/5dc3c7d282a21d06c42aa91bea162dd7--enclosed-carport-pergola-carport.jpg

The size is large,, I'd try painters canvas tarps, lots of sizes, cheap, can be dyed, or trim added, if this is used for a patio area. Hang like they use for cabanas, can be opened or closed depending on the sun. can be anchored at the bottom if needed. Sheers also can be added if you want a bit more privacy, keep them open or closed and the canvas them open.. you can hang them with narrow pipe and elbows and drapery rings, tie them back at the posts with a decorative rope knotted, wide ribbon, chain or any kind thing that goes with the decor. I'd add flower boxes or shrubs to give the lower level some privacy without blocking it totally..

  • Awesome suggestions here! I would install tension rods or dowels on brackets and make "curtains" from dropcloths - you can use the curtain rings with clips. Oh so easy. Can be opened when you wish or tied up in bad weather.

You say for shade or privacy for you, but it seems like it might be for privacy for your neighbors (Look at all of your stuff)! I also think trying an easy fix with painters tarps-they have them at Dollar Tree-is a great way to go.

i would like lattice it comes as wood or white plastic

  • DesertRose DesertRose on Aug 23, 2017

Lattice comes in many colors now and vinyl so it needs no paint, then plant a rapid growing vine like honey suckle or creeping morning glories, they will give you perfect privacy and make it feel homier too!

I also like the lattice idea, but there are breathable tarp type patio privacy panels in different colors, some with stripes, that are made for just this purpose and are used to cover chain link fences, pool privacy, deck surrounds, etc. They have the rings in them to use rope or zip ties to hold them in place. Not expensive on ebay.

    Hope this helps

You could use the fabric shower curtains and place them on heavy wire or use hooks and closet rod. They are waterproof and fairly reasonable in price. Even cheaper at thriftstores.

Fabric shower curtains are not always waterproof.

Lumber yards and big box stores sell plastic lath or wood if your prefer. It could be hung to cover the openings; using furring strips to attach the panels together, but they would still allow light and air through. I would avoid a solid (i.e. wood siding type system) as it may be against your building codes for a carport.

Check this site out. I had to order some for work to cover the bay doors. You can see out, but no one can see in. They are great. Good customer service.

Actually, I would be inclined to do both lattice and outdoor curtains/drop clothes. One for privacy and one to block the sun. You can tie the curtains back while not in use and use them when needed.

There are long wide blinds you can get just like you can put on your porch. They can measure and cut them. Roll them up and down.

you wouldn't need a permit to put up lattice, it allows light, shade and privacy to the area.

If you can sew, then here is a neat idea. cut squares from old jeans and sew them together for the correct size and put a rod at the bottom so it can be rolled up when not needed. If it gets wet no problem just let it down till dry. I like mine, cheap and blocks the sun and looks nice.

Slats, as wide or narrow as you like, in a horizontal or vertical pattern, with space in between for light and air to get through.

Hi! If theres soil right there maybe some canna plants or shrubs. A living fence is always nice.

I have the same problem. I'm thinking of evergreens or holly shrubs.

How about rectangular sail? they come in all kinds of color and sizes.

They let the air thru and keep out the elements.

I prefer the wood or plastic trellis (cross ties). I can see out, but I get shade and most people can't see what's inside from the strreet and without coming up real close.

  • Julie D. Grant Julie D. Grant on Aug 26, 2017

That is lattice work I'm recommending.

  • Jan Loehr Jan Loehr on Aug 26, 2017

You would need more vertical support pieces to attach the lattice to, but I would go with that as the cheapest and best solution...we did that to our downstairs patio ...simply cut the lattice to fit on the vertical pieces and nail in place.

I would use 2x4's and pallets, using a herringbone effect. Most places give away pallets. Cost would be minimal. Time would be in taking apart pallets and sanding, but well worth it. Leave enough space between boards for aeration and paint or stain as you desire! It would allow for more space, also, for items to be organized on the walls.

Harbor Freight has 16'w x 7' h garage door screens. Comes with mounting hardware and nagnet closures for $25. A couple of these hung like curtains on the open sides would be perfect.
