Even though you may not care for them they do serve a purpose. It may also make part of the area darkler due to loss of natural light. Do not forget that whatever you decide has to meet your local building codes too. Here are some options.

I just painted my white handrail black. Gives a much more contemporary look.
I think replacing them with geometric metal spindles would be pretty, then change the color of the top rail to dark brown or make the railing metal dark brown same as the geometric metal spindles (some come with curly designs , others with rectangular boxes) and replace the pole too. This would really accent your wall but leave the white on the side boards of the stairs and replace the wall mounted rail to match the new metal railing. Geometric is really in style now and it would go perfectly with your stairs and wall colors!
Removing the spindles is definitely an option but you've got to replace them with something up to code now or when you sell the house. You could leave them in place and just cover both sides with thin Sheetrock or fiberboard and texture the new surface, then paint it.
