What can I do with these spindles if I cannot remove them? Help

Are you sure you can't remove them? They aren't usually structural (of course it is better to check). I had 2 half walls with them, and they came off quite well...We removed the moulding between them on the bottom with a glazing bar (thin pry bar), you could probably use a chisel and hammer, then we just shimmied them back and forth and they came out...no screws. Then there was a flat piece of moulding on the ceiling.

If for some odd reason they are structural, you could replace them with a couple of nice columns.

You should be able to cut them out at the top and bottom of each spindle, then sand and stain or paint the wood casing in a color you like. Use the spindles for craft projects, etc.

I see that the molding around your door and the floor by the door is light. Perhaps you could paint the spindles and molding light to match that part of your décor.

Are you unable to remove them because you're renting? Because I think you could make a good case to your landlord that removing them would increase rather than decrease his property value, since the look is dated and chops up the rooms.

If you absolutely can't remove them, then painting them a lighter color would brighten the space a bit.

When you can, remove the whole wall for an open look. But for now, you could hang sheer curtains from one end to the other, floor length, including the "door". Tie the sheers back in the door area. To make this really snap, paint the half wall and spindles the same color as the sheers. It's an idea 😇

if you can't remove them then you can weave fabric through them and make a pretty screen, oryou could wrap them in burlap..

Take out the whole wall it will open up that room and look fab

They typically wouldn't be on a weight baring wall. Just cut them out as close to the top and bottom. With that being said, that entire wall probably isn't weight bearing, you could just take down the top part, bottom part or both. Good luck.

Paint them in a light color to lighten up the area.

Paint them white and then glaze them bright colors to make your home festive or like a caravan . Lot of color every where . I like a bright and fun home that reminds me of a dolls house and anyone that comes to visit find it very comfortable. A few don't but it is my home , LOL my space and if I had something like this , well oh my it would be glorious.

I'm just guessing here but it appears that your home was built during that period of time when interiors were chopped up or areas were defined as specific living areas, kitchen, living room, dining room. Tear out the wall and open the space. The wall is not load bearing. Spindles do not support load bearing walls. Google, 'how to determine if a wall is load bearing.

As a last resort, you can buy a woodpecker and let him go to town on those spindles!

We had almost the very same thing when we bought our house . We took them out and made cut outs looking in to the living room on both sides Kind of like a large window. We had two walls in a L shape.When we needed a change this is what we did . Once you remove them put up sheet rock half away and on top forming a large cut out like a window unframed. . You can make little alcoves between the studs for storage . Place plants picture frames Or little decorations in them for an updated look with the seasons .

Exactly what don't you like about the spindles? Shape? Color ?

If you don't like the shape and cannot remove them ... there is a wrap around covering you could try. My sister had it to put around the support columns in her basement. Looked like wood columns. This was many years ago. There may be smaller sizes available now. If not, maybe the large size can be cut down.

If the spindles are not supporting ... just remove & replace ... with different spindles ... or leaded glas, etc. Or remove the whole wall & open up the room. Or put up drywall and block it all off.

Back in the 70's they were just decorative, not structural. I'd remove them, make the little necessary patches, then enjoy the openness. Best of luck.

I would personally add decorative columns and drywall the over the wood ledge to make it look updated and brighter and here's a few ideas that you may like.

I would take the spindles out if I could but maybe replace the wall or at least at the end of each wall, put in some kind of pillar. These these types of add ins are for architectural personality. When you update your home keep a personality in mind. Homes need balance.
