I agree it's a mushroom, and a stinkhorn (a member of the Phallaceae family). I think it's Mutinus ravenelli.
Mutinus elegans, a mushroom from the Midwest, also known as stink-horn. Nasty, smelly (like rotten meat) that draws flies. Ugh!

I agree, it is amazing the things you can learn from the smart people here at Hometalk! I thought I had seen a lot of mushrooms before, but this one takes the cake. At first I thought it was a muti-legged sock monkey!
