I'm not sure there is such a thing as ugly brick. However to each his own. Painting is the easiest step but remember you can't really remove it from the brick if you later change your mind. You could take it out completly but that's a job.
I've also seen people actually build a wood frame cover for it with a mantle etc. and use moulding like you would in a wall in an older house to decorate it.
