You can make slip covers for them. Look in the back of the pattern books for "home furnishings and decorations." I tried one, once and it was just way to expensive with the designer kind of fabric I had my heart set on. It is a lot of work, and takes a lot of fabric, the way the pattern shows it. Once at a wedding I saw just little back covers that were slid over the backs of the chairs. The bride said that she traced around the back of a chair, got pieces cut out 2 for each chair with enough extra for a seam allowance and just sewed around the two pieces with the right sides together, trimmed the seams, turned them inside out and put them on the chairs. It looked very nice for the wedding, and I don't think she planned on long-term use.

Some of the home furnishing catalogs have covers for sale (maybe try Brylane Home; they're less expensive), or perhaps Bed, Bath & Beyond online.
