Any ideas how to surface patio area next to Saltillo tile patio?

Area next to patio pavers was grass but in Arizona that's wasted water. I don't want expense of setting more pavers and don't like loose rock, stone gravel. I do have a dog that occasionally "uses" area. It's less, than 200 sq. Ft. Any great ideas?

You could buy a few inexpensive bushes or perennials, then fill with mulch. That's about the least expensive way and also your dog would like it too!

Yes, I do! I'm in the middle of Missouri, which can have brutal heat in the Summer. I have a beautiful ground cover called Ajuga in one area, then in the back yard I have a Sedum ground cover. When you start looking you will see that there are almost 100 varieties of Sedum and I have no idea which one this is. I've looked at pictures trying to find the name for you, but haven't found the right one. Ask at a nursery, tell them it's light green, gets about 4" tall and has tiny yellow flowers in the spring. Both of these ground covers are beautiful and spread like crazy. Good luck!

Cactus garden. Seriously. Or succulents better yet. A pencil tree is poisonous to dogs so don't go there.

What about a drought tolerant ground cover around some drought tolerant plants or shrubs? Check with local trusted greenhouse for what will work best for your area, if anyone knows, they will, and they won't try to sell you just anything because it looks good (it is their reputation).

One of the things that we have found that works well here in Phoenix is "de-composed granite" it will pack very well after being wet down... would be easy to clean up after your dog and is a nice tan brown color similar to your saltillo tile. I would use a weed barrier underneath and then you could fill the area with colorful pots with plants such as springerai ferns, petunias, lantana, succulents, purple heart... lots of stuff that will tolerate the heat of summer and will survive our winter (such as it is)

Hi. I used DG in LA before I came here and the problem I had was the dog (and I) tracked in a ton of "sand". It looks great but it wrecks hardwood floors. But, thank you for suggestion.
