I wouldn't leave it outside in winter unless it's artificial. Fig trees are meant to thrive in a Mediterranean climate, and may have a hard time surviving cold weather. Protect them during harsh winter months by covering the base of the tree with leaves or hay, and wrapping the branches with blankets, carpet padding or another warm protective layer. Finish with a plastic bag, bubble wrap, burlap or a tarp secured with rope. If your tree is in a container, bring it inside before the first frost and wait until the ground is warm to move it back outside.

After fig leaves drop in the fall, shape your plant by removing suckers and heading back long branches. Move to a protected are such as a garage. This is the info I found at the State of Maryland Extension Service. Maryland is in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone. You could check with your state's Extension Service for additional information.

My grandfather covered his in winter for years. It was planted in the ground in Philadelphia, PA. It got so tall he had to cover the top from his 2nd story window years later.
