I would not hide those beautiful lines of the spiral. Put a plant on a pedestal with the right side higher than the left, so the lines of the plant match the lines of the spiral. You want to SHOWCASE that beautiful staircase. The existing picture just makes that area look junky.
You need to add color with plants and colorful things, not dark. Perhaps you could make the trunks a brighter color and I would do as Karen suggested with a plant or three of different heights that matches the lines of the staircase.
Add a light look, such as a plant, and replace the present things to another place in your beautiful home. Let that gorgeous area be a show case. Right now it looks like a storage space.
There are too many objects on the little table. Move the table to the right of the trunks and put some brighter colored objects in a group of 3, i.e a plant, as suggested above, could be one.
beautiful!!! Personally I'd paint it an accent color!!! Easy and fairly inexpensive and it will look awesome!!
I have seen several of the DIY shows use an area like this as a small desk area. Try painting it a beautiful or fun color (even on the "ceiling" of the area) a pretty or unusual chair, table or desk, open shelves, an attractive lamp nice art work or a special mirror. It could become a cozy place to sit and read for you or the kids. Less is more... the pouf can stay... but the other stuff needs to move else where.
With the right arrangement it could be an attractive place to hang coats and put boots or shoes... all in the "furniture and fixtures"

Use uplights with whatever you decide.
I would put one of my Chinese goldfish bowls and get the rest of the stuff, nice but too small, out of there..... Maybe paint it red or gold to get it to pop or some other metallic color (rustoleum metallic paint comes in 12 colors)..... https://www.houzz.com/product/75382484-17-flower-design-porcelain-fishbowl-planter-with-wooden-stand-asian-indoor-pots-and-planters
The things you have there are not bad, the trunks are great pieces, but there is just too much put there together. Clear out the space entirely and only put the trunks back. Having just that one element of design will allow the eye to focus on the staircase and the simple beauty of the trunks. The only other thing I would add back then would be a plant on a stand. If you don't want to put the trunks back, try a small table that is in proportion to the space and add only two accents to the table. You have a beautiful home if the staircase is any indication.
First off, you have too much stuff under there. Maybe 3 things only. I was actually thinking of a fairy garden. Maybe acute little table and chair for decoration.
IMO, all you need is to be able to see what you already beautifully arranged. Light is up! And dont second guess your creativity, because you have done well without my busy body! Lol
I like the trunks.just dress them up with a bit of color - like some material draped down over them
Maybe put a small desk or writing table, with a small chair. My other idea is to put a a large decorative potted plant, depending on the light the area gets.
A table lamp
Not sure if the photo shows the whole space to the right ...is this the whole space? I would remove every single thing you have in there as nothing is working to showcase the space...I would also consider grounding the space on the floor with a horizontal rug complementing your tile, maybe a taupe color neutral...then try placing a fake tall plant on the right in a nice pot...there are lots of possibilities in artificial plants these days, maybe a Snake plant which gives height, nothing too wide just high...on the left I would try a small table or a bench to hold a nice lamp you need light in this spot as well, play around with some ideas until you like what you see, just get this clutter look out of there..
