I live in an old rental apartment which has old closets. When it rains the closets get moldy which rubs off onto my clothes. What can I do to remedy this?

  • You need a dehumidifier in the closet - at a minimum. I would wash the walls, then prime with Kilz or Zinsser, then paint and install a dehumidifier. Your landlord should do this for you. In the meantime use lawn and leaf bags turned upside down and placed over the hanger to protect your clothes.

Also, contact the owner or management agency, it could be a roof leak that is pooling in that area

You first have to figure where the moisture is coming into the closets and fix that. Close off the source of the water or fix a roof leak. Then scrub it down with water and bleach mix about 50% solution. Next is to seal walls of closet with a GOOD mold Primer Paint formulated to cover mold . -- Mold are air borne spores landing in a habitat produced by a water source + right temperature, light and ventilation, for the type of spore to grow. Even if you tear out the walls, unless you deal with the moisture and temperature you won't solve the problem. Lots of articles on google about mold.
