Can I thin my lilys now, and when can I plant the "extras"?

No, I don't recommend thinning your lilies now. Wait until threat of frost is over. Then cut them back. When you see new ones coming up, then take your shovel and cut into them to thin them. Take some out and leave some there. About half and half. For the ones you take out, plant them someplace else. Next Fall, cut all of them down to the ground (leave roots alone) and cover with mulch. The following Spring, you can repeat the whole process again.

I have had success dividing in the spring, so if you are adventerous and want to take a chance with one and try, just to see what happens, go for it.

what temp is there rate at which they can freeze and live . i would guess not to epose them to the cold anymore than they have been

It’s possible you are talking about daylillies. It’s pretty hard to kill them, but wait until the end of February. ☺️

I would definitely wait until the threat of frost or freeze is over. Just so you know, right now Minnesota is warmer than most of the gulf coast. We think nothing of a five degree wind chill. Our kids don't even get out of school unless the wind chill is thirty to forty below zero. I hope you have some winter clothes to stay warm. We are heading into a winter heat wave in a couple of days, they are even talking about hitting forty degrees! That is sweatshirt weather to me. Hope you get better weather down there soon!
