YES - just do it for more space!
Above the fireplace is too high and will strain the eyes and neck to be looking up to watch tv. Eye level or slightly below is best for viewing computer monitors and TVs.
i prefer the tv at a lower level, have in an armoire. It really is your personal preference. I like my decorated mantle and oil painting.

Many MANY reason's not to.
Joe and I had the same argument I didn't want the TV to be the center point of the room. If I were you, I would consider something more colorful over the fireplace to compete with the opening and the TV. Good Luck
My sister is dealing with this issue now. Her TV is above the fireplace. It is an old school iron one that REALLY kicks out the heat. She has noticed that the heat seems to be negatively impacting the TV...as if the television is internally screaming, "Help me, I'm melting!" I highly advise against it unless it is an electric fireplace that allows you to determine the intensity of the heat.
I have my 65ā hdtv mounted to my wall at 40ā off the ground to the bottom side of my TV. Whatās too high really depends how large your room is and how far your going to be sitting away from the TV. I have a large front room and my TV sets about 8ā above a cabinet with a fake fireplace that has a heater in it!
Height of your TV a personal choice, but If youāre not sitting to close to your TV you should be fine with your TV height between 40-45ā off the floor to the bottom of the TV set! Btw, I sit 12ā away from my TV set! So say your only sitting 6ā away then this height I mentioned could be too high for you and may want to stay between 30-36ā off the ground to the bottom of your TV set. In other wards the farther you sit away from your TV the higher you can have your TV without feeling like your looking at the ceiling to watch TV!
No. The t.v. is far larger than the mantelpiece and would overwhelm it. It is even too high on the piece of furniture it is on. If you did lower it, it would be more in line with the opening in your fireplace. . .would look more of a piece. You should be looking slightly down at a t.v. I would actually try in some way to hide the t.v. when you are not watching it. But that is my own opinion and I do love my t.v.! Gale above makes a good point. If I sat 12' away from my t.v. I would be in the front yard! We are lucky in having another room than our l.r. to watch t.v. in and it is in a niche so hidden by a French door when we are not watching. BTW thank you for posting the pics. It makes given advice far easier.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Great advice. Lower the televsion, do NOT mount it above the fireplace and try to conceal it (if I am able). He wins...just don't tell him! LOL
you currently have different focal points whether you intended to or not. I'd definitely mount it above the FP, and create another seating area on the wall with the buffet. You refer to that buffet as"old", but it's a good looking Piece. Have you considered painting it white to match you mantle/surround, trim?? Good luck!
I've heard that it isn't a good idea to put your Tv over your fireplace, even though a lot of people do, I won't chance it. I have a beautiful round mirror over my fireplace. It is the focal point of the room, why would you want to put a tv over it. Just my personal opinion.
Your fireplace would look lost with the TV above it. Rearrange your furniture in the living room and place the tv on a different wall if you can.
you are not supposed to look up to long at anything as you will get tiered sooner than you think, unless you have recliners so your eyes are looking upwards anyway eric
WWe have our 70" above our fireplace. It'
Mounted on the wall and the mount allows the TV to tilt down just enough. We don't have a huge living area but large enough to accommodate. The type of furniture to have and the veiwing distance will determine your comfort level and avoid neck strain. We rearranged the entire area including the TV during Christmas to decorate. We placed it on the entertainment stand which placed it at "eye level". Let me tell you, we couldn't get that sucker back above the fireplace fast enough. Right after breakfast on New Years Day, Christmas decor down for the year and TV back in its rightful place.
What I was going to say is, put it above the FP. If you don't like it or it doesn't work out, move it back. No harm no foulš
Place your reading nook by the fireplace for a cozy feel. A chair, small end table and lamp and you are good to go. Tv on the wall. Above the fireplace use pictures or empty frames layered to give some height and balance to the fireplace. Draw the eye upward.
i was totally agaisnt having my tv over the fireplace and my husband āwonā and I absolutely love it. I also suggest trying it to see what you think. It definitely frees up floor space!
dMj, Iām not suggesting they put a huge tv in a cabinet of any size. Mine is 40ā and is at eye level.

the picture of tv just came through. No way should this go over the mantle for many reasons. It would look monstrous, overwhelming the fireplace. Too high to view.
Hi Loni, currently our tv is mounted above our fireplace and I think it's too high. We rent right now so we can't move it. We are in the process of buying our own place (closing in 1 month!) I think that for viewing, above your fp is an ideal location for the tv. Can you re-arrange your furniture to accommodate better viewing on the wall it's currently on? If that's an option, maybe mount the TV so it looks floaty (my own word!) If you want to, you could paint the buffet a lighter color and that would make the area look lighter. Just remember you have to be happy with how it functions and how it looks. On a different subject, I LOVE your flooring. Is it tile or hard wood? Where did you get it? Our new place needs all new flooring & I love the look of the wood floor but with the easier upkeep with tile. Good luck with your decision. Post what you decide!
i have a 65ā tv mounted above my fireplace and I love it. This is the third tv I have mounted above the fireplace in different homes. I canāt imagine a better spot because the fireplace is a natural focal point. Go for it!
TV should always be at eye level.
It seems like designers always put TV above the FP, and every ad shows this placement, and fireplaces are built allowing for a TV connection, etc, but, personally, I hate the idea. I think the TV detracts from the fireplace as a focal point. I especially hate the aesthetic of a TV that is larger than the fireplace opening.
I don't think it's good for you or your electronics. It's too high above the fireplace.
I think the TV will overpower the fireplace. Yes, the TV may fit wall to wall, but if it is larger than the fireplace mantle it won't look good.
Hereās a picture of where my 65ā sits on my wall, floor to ceiling is 96ā , as you might be able to tell the top of my TV is only 18ā from the ceiling and the bottom of the TV is 40ā from the floor. Hopefully this gives you a better visual perspective?
they need a edit option, type o on my measurements from the top of Tv to ceiling should read 28ā
No, ours was up on the wall for 6 months, the whole family agreed it needed to be back down eye level. Was hard watching āupā all the time. Kids didnāt like for video games up high either. We vote to keep it low.
I guess our mantle must be higher than ours, our 65 inch would never fit. Ours right now is almost up to the ceiling. We have an old 48 inch underneath it attached to our entertainment center for video games and my dads old office chair to sit in to play the games so that one is eye level. We sit about fifteen feet from the TV unless you are playing a game. We don't use our fire place and right now have a large aquarium and a bird cage in front of it.
no
if you like to decorate your mantel, then no. Mine is above the mantel and I hate it! I have to be very careful with what I put on the mantel (garland at Christmas) so that it doesn't obstruct the sensors on the TV
A tv at mantel height will force you to look up. Very uncomfortable.
My husband and I mounted our large TV above the mantle and it looked good. Problem...when watching TV you had to view as if you are looking up and we had to take it down. So check out that before mounting it. It was a pain in the neck, literally.
Speaking as someone who has the same design it doesnāt work well if the fireplace is on. And the tv is directly above it . The components get very hot. Weāre looking at options to move ours
It doesn't look like you have the wall space over the fireplace for the t.v.
Thank you everyone. I have a lot to think on.
Definitely move it to above the fireplace!
Yes the tv would start your focal for the room and I would paint just that section of the fireplace wall in a accent color picked from throw pillow or by adding an area rug, This will add height to your room and the tv console can be used in another. If you have another photo of the entire room, the changing of furniture placement would also add another layer to your room along with an area rug and center coffee table to complete the look.
I am looking at your picture and seeing that when the TV is off and no fire burning you have 2 black holes. If the TV is bigger than the mantle and fire box it will look top heavy, unless you paint everything black. Do you want to tilt your head back to watch TV?
Fireplace. It will feel more balanced.
