Wild flowers
Map out some gardens, either flower, vegetable, or a combination. In between them make paths using pavers or stone. You could even use pea gravel. Be sure to do the proper prep work so they'll look great for a long time!

Buy some of that new golf course grass seed that doesn't get higher than 3".
First, see if your city allows no mow lawns. Mine doesn't, and code enforcement people check the front and back yards along with a list of possible violations. You will have to clear out any rye, St. Augustine, and broadleaf grasses. You can find local grasses at big garden stores and nurseries, or order them online. You plant wildflowers and ground cover by scattering the seeds or planting the sets. You can plant cacti and large succulents. You can plant in barrels and other containers. You can make a rock walkway or a whole rock garden. No mow doesn’t mean no care. You have to make sure the plants don’t get higher than your fence. You have to weed and water the plants as they need it. And you cannot let your yard become infested with animals and create a health hazard. Good luck ☺️
I had a section of my yard that actually stayed muddy and wouldn't grow grass, so I acquired left over brick from different peoples projects. I simply put the brick directly on the ground, filled in the areas between the bricks with sand, and placed my antique glider rocker and flower pots on top. Now it is not an eye sore and is an enjoyable place in my yard.
