Sun and shade, lots of both. A hammock on a metal frame is portable, as is an adult swing. If you don’t have a pool, buy at least a kids’ plastic pool and dig a shallow circle to stabilize it some, or add a couple of large rocks. If you are allowed, put in a small fire pit, or Koi garden, or indigenous plant garden. Get what you love, but in smaller proportions. Less is more in a small backyard. Aloha! ☺️
I know you gets some strong winds in Maui, so anything that you do decide on installing as far as shade, or privacy, must be anchored down properly. Check into pivoting marine-grade clips and hooks as far as any removable tarps or covers. They will not be cheap, but they will be very sturdy, durable, and rust-proof.
We lived in West Maui for 20 years. We extended our small patio with 12 inch concrete squares from Home Depot. As far as the landscaping, most tropical plants flourish there so that part will grow like crazy. We also put in a water feature like this made out of a chipped, glazed pot that we bought on the cheap at a garage sale in Lahaina. I just turned the chip to the side yard so you didn't see it. I like those 12 inch concrete squares so much that I used the same technique to extend our patio in Las Vegas.
