We have paneling in our small den. We painted it several years ago. Came out fine. Not sure what type of paint hubby used but just ask the salesperson when you start shopping for colors.

If you lightly sand the walls and then.apply a primer such as Peel.Stop to the walls prior to paintimg with a good quality paint - i suggest one of the "one coat" paints that are a paint and primer mix.... the paint will stick. Best of luckto you.
Painting is very possible! WE painted a house we bought that had all paneling. First we caulked all the cracks, then we used aroma free Kilz primer paint. Then we painted each room the color we wanted. A wallpaper border at the top was added in the front room and dining room. You could not tell it had ever been paneled. It looked really nice!
We had a long hallway in our home that was dark and paneled in faux paneling. I washed the paneling with T>S>P> [trisodiumphosphate} and water. When it was dry, the next day I painted it with Benjamin moore paint. Lasted for years, and washed down beautifully.
My brother had this paneling allover his home when he moved there. He used Kiltz primer, then painted. Changed up the whole look. He left the "cracks" in the paneling so it has an informal look.
Yes everyone was a great help
I did amazing things with mine in my front room. First step is to clean clean clean to ensure paint will adhere properly. I used TSP. I then chose two colors to add dimension. Light on top and darker on the bottom. Once the painting was complete, I added a nice chair rail that had been painted bright white and painted the ceiling bright white. It opened up the room beautifully. Be sure to invest in quality paint. In the kitchen I floated 1/8" drywall over it, added 'beadboard' on the lower half and did the same paint & chair rail on the top. These two inexpensive updates added several thousand dollars in value when I sold it recently. Tape, tape, tape and above all, have fun! I hope this helps.
