How about a fire pit? A raised bed for plants would spruce it up. Additionally, you might want to paint your furniture some bright colors and add cushions.

You need to define your seating area. A floor, or some sort of screening would both do that. (see below) When you have done that, arrange the furniture in a grouping to allow conversation or eating etc. Or even for viewing other activities that might be taking place in the yard. . . a family of nearby neighbors has family entertainments so I can see a need for seating for that kind of activity. A pergola or even just a row of plants in pots that grow tall could all make a definition of the space. Good luck!

    Start with your budget.
    Then define the area size.
    Decide on floor type.

If you want to retain your sitting, paint all in like color.
Put the wooden bench and sofa across from each other.
The two chairs on the far end.
This gives you an entry way into the conversation square.
Use something large in the center for putting drinks and snacks on and evening lighting
Put small table between two chairs for drinks and evening lighting
If there's bright sun in summer get large square umbrella to cover. Good luck.

Filling in around your large flat stones with pea gravel really gives a nice appearance. Just make sure your large flat rock (slate or what ever you have) is basically level. Using a 4 ft construction level is very helpful. Pea gravel can be purchased at Lowes in 40 lb. bags. Very helpful if you don't have a dump trailer or p/u.

I collected some 2x4's.I didn't have a big spending budget so I got 3 or 4 whenever I could. My mom had some used 4x4x8's. I then built an 8'x8' platform, used some cinder blocks to raise it up a bit and to level it. It didn't require a builders permit or anything because it wasn't a permanent fixture. I painted it every year or so to go with whatever theme I had going in the small yard. I loved that "deck" and so did all the neighbors! I sat out there in my rocking every chance I got. I added a back rail to it, to give it some place to hang flowers or what ever.

Decide on a flooring type (pavers would be great), add an area rug (to bring some color in), add seating (bench or stand alone chairs and bring in more color with those), throw pillows, planters, maybe some lighting, some of those rock like looking speakers, some sort of table, etc.
