I would get real estate comps for the neighborhood you are looking at on houses that have recently sold in that neighborhood for a comparable house.
I agree with Sharon. Real estate prices vary by region, community, style and age. You need to get comparables within the area your looking at. I sold homes in the Chicagoland area for $200.000+ that in California would sell for $500,000+. Had a client from California and he was shocked at our low prices.
Consult the many real estate websites, searching for the area you are interested in. The descriptions of homes for sale and recently sold are very detailed, including lot size, house size, and usually include pictures. That should give you an idea of the prices. Some even include demographics and crime statistics.
