I saw a hanger storage in Bed, Bath & Beyond, it was the shape of a hanger and looked that you could get severals hangers in it.
In the closet... When removing clothing, put empty hanger in front. Easy to find .
Hang back in closet or purchase a hanger storage device. They are quite tall and can store lots of hangers.

I have a cheaper hanger organizer I bought for about 6 dollars. I drilled 2 holes in it and hung it on the wall in my laundry area so I can hang stuff as soon as I take it out of the washer or dryer. Here is a picture of one.
my closets are narrow back to front. So in the least used one I put a tension curtain rod across at the top of the closet. I store extra hangers here.
