Put a cloth saturated with household ammonia in a small Ziploc bag. Seal the top and then cut a corner off and place in the entrance of the hole. They will scatter as the ammonia permeates the space in their tunnel.
That should be cut off a corner.....
One problem is what animal are you calling a "gopher?" Where I come from gophers are ground squirrels--like big chipmunks. Other areas call groundhogs gophers (they are really marmots). Some people call moles gophers. And there are also some tortoises that are called gophers. Technically, gophers are pocket gophers but it all depends on where you live. Poison of some sort is likely your best bet but you need to research carefully on what will work and how to use it. You don't want to end up killing your neighbor's dog! Good luck.
Level all the areas in your yard with hard rake, then go out in the morning to inspect where the new mound is. Then take a piece of juicy fruit chewing gum (as if you’re going to chew it your self. ) push it into the hole. He will eat it,it will clog his digestive system and unfortunately will die.
If you or if you know anyone who has snakes, keep the skin when they shed and place a good long piece in each in hole. They won't be back. Tried and true!
