Don't allow him on the couch in the first place!~ A firm NO and a spray of cold soapy water on the nose.
There are sprays that you can put on the cushions on the couch that they won't like that you could use to train him not to destroy the cushions. If it doesn't discolor them, you could also try spritzing hot sauce on them. Just be aware that some dogs do like spicy food!
Muzzle him when you go out. I have a car seat problem. So now my pup is muzzled when I leave him in the car. He can still drink water but now when strangers tease him he can bark and go crazy but my NEW leather seats stay intact. I remove the muzzle as soon as I get back in the car.
Crate train the dog so he isn't able to roam when you are gone. When he is good praise him and then praise him some more. Dogs respond more to positive re-enforcement then punishment (just like kids).
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I'm hoping with the weather getting nicer out, they'll (yes, I have TWO!) be worn out by evening from running around outside all day long!
Spray bitter apple on the sofa. When your dog starts to chew, he'll get a bad taste in your mouth. You can get it online or in your local pet store.
