What's on my ever-growing to-do list is to make something that you might want too--a caddy for the smaller items that take up space on my nightstand. My plan is to take a long rectangle of fabric (exact measurements depend on your preferences), hem one short side and then fold 1/3 of the fabric up, wrong sides together, to make a pocket. If the fabric is 24" long, for example, you'd fold up 8" so you'd have an 8" deep pocket. Make sense? Then I'd sew the long edges of the pocket closed, turn the whole thing right side out and hem the rest of the long edges and the remaining short edge. If desired, sew long seams on your pocket to create channels for different items such as a remote or two and your reading glasses, slip the long fabric piece between your mattress and boxspring and voilà! Hope that makes sense!
These will give you some ideas. The ones' where you can't lay your covers back down make no sense to me, but the others are ideas to try.

There are a number of products on the market that serve this purpose. Do a search on "bedside storage pockets" or "bedside storage caddy." Most are pretty inexpensive.
