The best prevention is a fence. We like rabbit wire, it is easy to install and not expensive. Also, when we put in ours, we also put it 6 or so inches under ground so the small mammals would not dig down under the fence.

First of all, plant the plants that they do not like. That means almost anything that grows wild. Hostas, arborvitae, .... might as well add salad dressing to go with them. Also astilbe and burning bushes. Even my chickens eat them. They actually draw the deer and rabbits to your yard. Then mix 4 eggs well, add hot sauce and dish soap and put in a sprayer. This will last for a while, but will wash off in the rain. The eggs help it last longer.
A fence but I used what I call a covered raised bed, was actually to keep the chickens out but would work for deer and rabbits too. http://www.gardenupgreen.com/2016/02/covered-raised-bed.html
Deer turn their noses up at fragrant plants with strong scents. Sages, ornamental salvias, and lavender, daffodils, garlic, annual vinca, marigolds, coneflowers
Use a vegetable peeler on the bar of Irish Spring soap and scatter shavings around plants and bushes. There's a product called Bobbex that works really well if you have something you want to protect though!
I read this from Gma Kirk: A farmer gave me a gross recipe for repellent...but it works. cup or two of urine, tablespoons of crushed garlic, and cayenne pepper, two eggs in a gallon jug, shake well, fill rest of the way with water. Cap and let age a week. Then you drizzle small stream around the perimeter of whatever you want to keep them from eating - works on rabbits too!
