There are many high-quality vinyl murals available, on line, that could be customized to your specific style/need
Hi Dawn, I just painted over a couple of canvas prints I no longer liked and applied some vinyl wall stickers to them that I purchased on Amazon. it was really easy and fun!
Try a big Mirror - Cut out of magazines all sorts of things or colours you like and stick them to a board. Otherwise draw a Doodle and see what you can colour in with sharpies or stick fabric...........
you could hand tapestry also!
Get an old window, refinish the wood, and put either different photos with the same theme in each pane, or take one large print (whatever the size of the window is), trim it in squares or rectangles to fit in the panes, and make your own "view".
Depends what you are into. Have a friend who uses his laser cutter to make metal animals cutouts. Another friend who is into carving and his walls are adorned with that. I like photography and have pictures taken over the years on the wall. My sister-in-law is into frogs and has frog everything. Some people collect stuff when they visit the ocean (like sea shells), others frame pretty squares of material. The list is endless.
Check out Amazon.com for wall decor and you will find more than you bargained for, depending on what you want to pay. All kinds of ideas too on Google.

Hang a quilt with a great, colorful pattern
Dawn,
Funny you should say you didn't want messy.... I didn't either. But I painted a large section of my kitchen wall with chalkboard paint and framed it out with crown moulding that matches my ceiling trim. It not only looks tailored and beautiful (and neat!) but it is a magnet for guests who want to leave messages and well wishes when they visit. It has both clean lines and character!
