Mulch shouldn't be more than 3 to 4" deep, and needs to be "top dressed" each year since mulch will work its way into the soil - about half of the height every season. Make sure you keep the mulch at least 1" away from all of your plant stems so they can breathe and have a chance to dry out after they are watered so they don't develop mold.

I agree with above comments. Anywhere between 3 and 4 inches works great.
