Just put it in some potting soil in a pot. I've still got one of mine on the countertop because I'm using the tops for cooking. Eventually, though it'll have to go out in the full sun. Good luck.
I have several in one pot which sits on the patio just outside my back slider (for convenience). To start a new one I just cut off about 3" of the white root end and poke it into the dirt, leaving about 1" showing. It will grow new shoots quickly with little care. When you need chopped green onions, jusr cut off the greens and leave the growing end there. It will keep growing new shoots, yay.
Onions like this or Shallots, even garlic that is greening is begging to grow but the taste of the greens which grow quickly are the very best.
I dig a hole deep enough for the bulb and an inch or two of the stalk. Mix a tiny bit of good compost and dirt to mound up in the hole. I make sure the dirt isn't too cold or wet. I prefer barely damp. Then water in a couple days later. I have about 75% chance of it growing. Good luck
we've been doing all of this! didn't know if we doing good but now reading all of this we think we have been! well, except for the planting - we didn't cut any part off the bulb - just put it in some dirt. and maybe we waited too long to plant it -- it got really light-weight because we enjoyed eating the green shoots so much and having it right there on the kitchen table! lol. well, learn from experience, and yes it has been a fun (and yummy!) experiment! the soil we put it in, in a pot, is probably not the best, either, but we will see what happens! this video, and the question, and all the answers, is VERY helpful, and nice to know we've had the right idea!
The onions that started growing were my first try at gardening, along with the potatoes. Just plant about an inch or so below the dirt. Onions and a few others like the cool of early spring, as long as it's not freezing. When you see the greens starting to die it's time to harvest the new onion.
I keep the root ends and plop in good potting soil and water. Here are some of mine.
It's hard to find veggies any more that do grow that have no chemicals and you should take advantage of this and regrow everything that you can.
Put it in the ground
