DIY Felt Poppies In Honor of Memorial Day
Aren’t poppies the prettiest? Not only do they look lovely – they also have symbolic meaning. Poppies (sometimes referred to as Memorial Day Poppies or Remembrance Poppies) are a symbol of Memorial Day, worn or displayed in honor of the men and women who have given their lives in service of our country. Memorial Day is May 26th this year, and these simple DIY poppies made from red felt are just one of the many ways you can honor the holiday.
Make your own pretty poppies out of red felt in honor of Memorial Day.
DIY red felt poppies are a perfect addition to a Memorial Day wreath. I made this one using the DIY felt poppy tutorial below, and this painted denim tutorial: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/craft/seasonal-decor/patriotic-painted-denim-bunting-3627416
To make a large or medium-sized open poppy, cut two petals out of red felt (see link below for template). Stack petals on top of each other, stitch a button to the center and tie the ends of your string tightly in back.
(Note: The wider you make your stitch in the front, the more of a bend your poppy will have after you tie the knot in back. For a totally flat poppy, keep your stitch close together and very close to center.)
To make a small, closed poppy, cut one petal out of red felt (see link below for template), fold it in half, roll it up and tie bottom corner with string – no sewing necessary!
Another pretty poppy idea? Tie one to a bucket and bring it to a Memorial Day Parade!

Happy Memorial Day!

Poppies are traditionally referring to Flanders Field, WWI, & are the symbol of Armistice Day November 11th, rather than Memorial Day, which originally was for honoring the Union dead during Civil War - when I was growing up in the Deep South, it was considered still a 'Yankee holiday'
