I do an Oxyclean soak in the washer, just start the cycle and then pause it, resume when you think they have soaked long enough.

If 100% cotton, it will be easier. If a blend, may not turn out bright white. I tend to stay away from bleach as it can "yellow" or "gray" fabrics over time and with natural fabrics, weakens the fibers.
Baking soda and vinegar normally works for me, but you might need something a bit more heavy duty.
I wash my whites with about 1/5 bottle of hydrogen peroxide along with detergent.
I use Shout ADVANCED, blue bottle. The trick is to get your family to spray the socks, or spots on any other clothing, before throwing them into the laundry basket so that they have a day or two to sit with the Shout on them. It will also work pretty well for stains on clothes that have been previously washed and dried.
don't be stingy!! Go for it! Good luck!
