Here is a link that demonstrates a GREAT update idea. It does involve popping the tiles themselves out but you can leave the grid in because you will be using. I think the end result is very impressive! https://www.hometalk.com/diy/s-23-awesome-things-you-didn-t-know-you-could-do-with-old-picture-frames-36569568
You can try hand or spray painting the tiles. Clean everything first, and use stable ladders. Metallics are trending now, so even if the tiles are the cardboard perforated ones, copper, tin, or a combination of several metallic colors will look cool. You can even add wood or plastic trim to some or all of the tiles. Please post on Hometalk! ☺️
if it is celetex tile, you can spackle the grooves and popcorn the ceiling
You could paint them, but it would be best if you either replaced the tiles with cool ones or took them down (it isn't very safe to use spray paint on the ceiling if you aren't a professional) to paint them.
Are the tiles removable? Is this like a drop ceiling? If so most of those are easily taken out. Then just give them a fresh coat of paint!
