i use Simple Green to get rid of fruit flies and gnats in the house. It is non toxic and does the job. Wipe everything down with it, spray the drains with it, and spray the gnats! Sometimes I have to keep a bottle close by to get them, but staying diligent you can get them all out of the home.
You have to cut off their reasons for being in your home. Most often things like dog feeding bowls, open dog food bags, dirty garbage cans, etc. attracts them.
Sometimes it is not gnats but "drain sludge bugs!" You try cleaning out your kitchen and bathroom drains by pouring about half a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by 1/3 cup of vinegar...it will boil out your drains. Don't forget the bathtub and shower!!
Hi,
i struggled with the gnat and fruitfly problem for a long time, and finally found the perfect solution. Gnats will lay eggs in the dirt of your houseplants and those babies come out after you’ve killed the adults with vinegar. I bought some fine sand at the nursery, and I covered the dirt in all my houseplants, completely, no dirt showing at all. Not only did my plants pots look beautiful, but all gnat activity was gone in three days!
I use a cup of apple cider vinegar (to attract the knats), pour 2 tbsp of dish liquid in it (this causes the knats to get trapped in the vinegar and not fly out), and cover with aluminum foil and poke holes in it.
If you have a lot of gnats, get fly strips where they are the most prevalent. Make sure you have no thin skinned fruits or vegetables on your counter. They like to go where there is moisture, so put boiling water down your drains until they are under control. If they are gathering in the soil of your houseplants, you will need to replace the soil with new and make sure you rinse down the plant and roots gently before repotting in your cleaned pot. They like to breed in the soil because of the fungus that could be growing in the soil.
