hickory, apple wood, those 2 are my favorites. remember to soak the wood chips before smoking with them.
Here is a great site that provides a comprehensive list of types of chips. I like soaking mine in bourbon sometimes.

Here in Texas the favorite is mesquite. Can't beat the aroma.
You can purchase bags of hickory and other types at your local hardware store or where ever they sell BBQs.
