Try spraying them with a mixture of vinegar and salt. That has no chemical that would hurt children or pets.
Boiling hot water works well. It took 3 applications but it did kill my weeds growing in cracks of a walkway. Vinegar and salt works also. Good luck

Vinegar works between pavers and rock walkway, between bricks etc. Maybe this would work

I have used a solution of i gallon of white vinegar, 1 cup of cheap table salt and 1 cup of Blue Dawn for several years with excellent results. The Dawn makes the other two ingredients adhere to the grass/weeds.
You will always have a few weeds no matter what you do as they can blow into and area with the wind, birds drop seeds, etc. The best thing to do is spray them with a vinegar/water solution to kill the roots and early spring use a pre-emergent.

Hello, I'm not sure how bit the area is, but a permanent solution would be to put down a heavy weed barrier under the lava rock, once you do this, you will have less weed problems. In the meantime, you can make a solution mix 1 cup of salt. 1 tablespoon of dish soap. 1 gallon of vinegar, pour into a spray bottle and spray weeds. Be careful not to spray plants that you love.
